While I abhor deficit spending, I also view our present reliance on foreign oil as seriously contributing to our personal and national debt and as a national security issue in need of immediate action.

The House reconvenes on Sept. 8th and has targeted Sept. 26th to adjourn. The Senate reconvenes on Sept. 4th and its adjournment date has yet to be determined. At stake during this final scheduled session of the year are the Alternative Energy Investment and Tax credits. H.R. 6049, which has passed the house but not the Senate, would extend these tax credits, but it’s being blocked by Senate Republicans. Another bill, H.R 5984, which was introduced on May 7, 2008 (and which is still in committee) also takes aim at extending these tax credits. Please take a few moments to email your elected representatives urging them to extend these tax credits.

Here’s a copy of the email I sent to Senators Reid and Ensign, and Rep. Heller:

Approximately $500 million in investment and production tax credits will expire Dec. 31 unless Congress renews them. Without that help, solar and wind power companies say they will reverse planned expansions and, in many cases, cut payrolls and capital investment. Investment tax credits are what makes solar power cost-competitive. Without it, expansion plans will be reconsidered and the cycle of U.S. dependence on foreign oil continues.

I urge you to take all necessary actions prior to the end of 2008 to extend the tax credits for alternative energy investment and production.
