Not so very long ago, our previously elected Senator, Sen. Ensign, a member of the “C Street family values crowd,” was alerted that his affair and cover-up was about to come to light by none other than a fellow C-Streeter by the name of Rick Santorum. Doug Hampton went to Rick Santorum for help and what did Santorum do, he went to Ensign to warn him.
Mr. Santorum (a C-Street associate) wasn’t a Senator at the time. Instead, he’d lost his bid for re-election and was working as a Fox News analyst. Given his job and his professed religious values, you’d think that when he received an email from Doug Hampton about Ensign’s affair, that he’d publicly condemn John Ensign. But did he? Nope. His immediate instinct was to throw the 7th commandment under the bus. His allegiance was not to the religious values he professes to hold, but to fellow C-Street family member, Sen. John Ensign. His actions during the Ensign affair speak volumes as to religious values and ethics. Instead of standing up for “family values” and demanding that Ensign resign, he chose to protect a “Family” member by the name of Ensign, tipping him off that Mr. Hampton was threatening to go public with details of Ensign’s extramarital (adulterous) scandal and unethical actions that bordered on criminal.
Now we’ve been hearing a lot of talk about how Romney’s religion is nothing more than a “cult.” But, I would argue that if it walks like a cult and it talks like a cult … well, it must might be one helluva cult, and it’s not Mormonism, it’s what Mr. Santorum is and has been knee-deep in promoting.
For those of you who may have forgotten, “C Street” is a controversial residential Christian fellowship house located on “C” street in Washington DC. A number of Governors, Senators and Congressmen are associated with the controversial house:
John Ensign (Senator, R-NV) Heath Shuler (Representative, D-NC) Tom Colburn (Senator,R-OK) Mike Doyle (Representative, D-PA) Sam Brownback (Senator/Governor, R-KS) Joseph Pitts (Representative, R-PA) Jim DeMint (Senator, R-SC) Mark Pryor (Senator, D-AR) Mark Sanford (Gov, R-SC) Charles Grassley (Senator, R-IA) John Thune (Senator, R-SD) Susan Collins (Senator), R-ME Bart Stupak (Representative, D-MI) Bill Nelson (Senator, D-FL) Todd Tiahrt (Representative, R-KS) Ben Nelson (Representative, D-NE) John Baldacci (Representative/Gov-ME) Frank Wolf (Representative, R-VA) Robert Aderholt (Rep-AL) Pete Domenici (Senator, R-NM Zach Wamp (Representative, R-TN) Don Nickles (Senator, R-OK) James Inhofe (Senator, R-OK) George Allen (Senator, R-VA) Ander Crenshaw (Representative, R-FL) Conrad Burns (Senator, R-MT) John R. Carter (Representative, R-TX) Mark O. Hatfield (Senator, R-OR) Mike McIntyre (Representative, D-NC) Ed Bryant (Representative, R-TN) Steve Largent (Representative, R-OK) J.C. Watts (Representative, R-OK) Chip Pickering (Representative, R-MS) John Boozman (Representative, R-AK) Daniel Coats (Senator, R-IN) JoAnn Emerson (Representative, R-MO) Lincoln Davis (Representative, R-TN) Tony Hall (Representative, R-OH) Jerry Moran (Representative, R-KS) Jim Slattery (Representative, R-KS) Tim Walberg (Representative R-WI) Mike Enzi (Senator, R-WY)
Now … why is it so controversial? It’s controversial in that its members believe they have been chosen by God to bring theocratic control not just to America, but to the entire world. They believe that God uses them for his purposes. The sad part is that they actually believe that they are not responsible for any evils they might commit, because as one of God’s chosen, they are only doing what God has willed them to do (their Jesus + nothing principle).
The Family is led by Doug Coe. It is most widely known for organizing the National Prayer Breakfast, at which every President of the United States since President Dwight D. Eisenhower, including President Barack Obama in 2009, has spoken. They believe in an extreme theological mandate. They call it the Seven Mountains Mandate. Basically, they intend to control the world, from America, through infiltration of:
- Business (wonder way why all the effort to promote corporations as “people”?),
- Education (they’re in the process of killing that … after all peons don’t need education),
- Family-units (wonder why all the cultural war activity?),
- Arts and entertainment (where values and virtue are celebrated or distorted),
- Government (making government smaller and less consequential provides them with greater control),
- Media (can anybody say Faux News), and
- Religion (where the teachings in the Bible can be twisted and distorted to support their insatiable need for power).
It is not uncommon for their leader, Doug Coe, to use approving references in his ‘sermons’ to dictators and oppressive regimes such as Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, Pol Pot, Joseph Stalin, and Chairman Mau. And you wonder how the teachings of Jesus keep getting distorted …
Jeff Sharlet has written two books (both of which I’ve read and recommend that you read) detailing the historical background, leaders, members and beliefs of the C-Street family members:
