My Favorite Software Applications

I have a hobby of sorts. Since I’m a bit of a geek, I save my neighbors a bit of their hard earned money by fixing their PCs for them (for free) when things go awry. Over the past couple of months, I’ve had 4 different neighbor’s PCs sitting on my countertop crippled by various viruses, trojans, etc., or just plain old operator error. One of them took me 3 days of perserverence, but I finally managed to banish the nasty pest that had not only invaded the hard drive, but the windows registry as well.

So, I thought I’d take a few minutes away from talking about Politics to list some of my favorite applications. Most of these are free for home use, though there is one, Stopzilla, that isn’t but it’s cheap and I highly recommend purchasing and installing a copy. Hope these favorites help you and that you don’t show up on my doorstep with a seriously ill PC saying … “Please help me! Can you fix it?”

Anti-Virus Programs:

  • Avast! Home Edition — Avast Home Edition is FREE for home/personal use. Works great. It’s not as invasive as Norton and McAfee and it doesn’t bog your PC down into nowhere land.   Plus, it has a feature that lets you perform a boot-time scan before windows starts up (which lets you delete any little uglies that might have set up residence in the system file).  Free for home/personal use; requires annual re-registration.
  • Microsoft Security Essentials — Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. If you’re a PC novice, you might want to install this anti-viral protection program (you can only install one “definitions driven” anti-virus program … so you’d need to pick MSE or Avast … but you wouldn’t be able to install both). MSE is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.
  • Threatfire — This “behavior-based” anti-viral program will work alongside your Anti-Virus program to boost its effectiveness in preventing malicious attacks on your PC. Free for home/personal use; $29.95 for commercial/business use.

Anti-Spyware Programs:

  • Stopzilla — Even when you think your anti-virus program has worked well and done it’s job effectively, you’ll be amazed what this wonderful little application will find on your PC. It’s well worth the small fee for the active protection it provides, blocking malicious attacks from hidden content on web pages you visit.
  • Windows Defender — Windows Defender is a free program that helps you stay productive by protecting your computer against pop-ups, slow performance and security threats caused by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Free is you’re using a genuine copy of MS Windows operating systems (Win 2000 no longer supported).   [Freeware]
  • Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware — If your PC should get infected by something really ugly, this program can be quite useful in helping to erradicate the pest. The free version is run on-demand by the PC user … but if you want it to run on it’s own, providing realtime protection, or scheduled scanning and updating operations, there’s a one-time fee of $24.95. I use this one more for when I’m troubleshooting and repairing other’s PCs to removed varmints that have plagued their registries.

  • Have you set your PC to receive and install updates from the Windows Update site automatically? If not, you should. When you don’t keep your PC up-to-date with the latest updates, you leave it vulnerable to attack.

  • You can also run the Disk Cleanup tool to get rid of a lot of the temporary files that have accumulated over time on your drive. It’s found in the same folder: Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Cleanup.

Hope that helps you …
